4 Things You Need To Know (11/9/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. Brexit

A key piece of Brexit legislation is set to be voted on later today, with the aim of ending EU law in the UK.

However, Labour have said they will be opposing the bill in its current form, due to the belief that it represents a “power grab” for the government.

David Davis, Brexit Secretary, has warned that opposing the repeal bill will lead to a “chaotic” Brexit.

2. 9/11 anniversary

Today marks the sixteenth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Almost 3,000 people died in the attacks which targeted New York City and Washington DC.

President Donald Trump and wife Melania led tributes at the White House and Pentagon, with the President saying “Our values will endure, our people will thrive, our nation will prevail, and the memory of our loved ones will never, ever die.”

3. Irma

Hurricane Irma has weakened as it continues its course across the southern United States, however, its initial impact in southern Florida has caused widespread chaos.

It is estimated that 62% of homes in the state are without power, with the Florida Keys being a particular area of concern having took the worst of the storm.

4. Wind cheaper than nuclear

UK offshore wind power is now cheaper than nuclear energy, with government contracts meaning that the cost of wind power is set to fall by 50% over the next half decade.

Environmentalists have heralded the news, and will now put further pressure on the government to look towards clean energy.
