4 Things You Need To Know – (29/6/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. G20

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged to make the Paris Climate Change Accord a key issue when she hosts next week’s G20 summit in Hamburg.

“We cannot expect easy discussions on climate change at the G20 summit,” she said.

President Donald Trump announced at the start of June that the US will be withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement. His decision was criticised by world leaders at the time, and they’ll get the chance to discuss this with him personally at the G20.

2. Northern Ireland

Power sharing talks between the DUP and Sinn Fein have been extended to Monday, with the parties failing to reach an agreement on a deal before today’s deadline.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced today that women from Northern Ireland will now be able to get abortions for free on the NHS in England.

3. Sky deal could go to the watchdog

Karen Bradley, the Culture Secretary, has said she is “minded” to refer 21ST Century Fox’s takeover of Sky to the competition watchdog.

Rupert Murdoch’s company already owns 39% of Sky, and he is looking to take full ownership with a £11.7 billion deal.

Ofcom have said that they have no concern about Fox’s commitment to broadcasting standards, however, they did note that the Murdoch family could end up having “increased influence” in UK affairs.

4. Russia mocks UK warship

Russia has mocked the UK’s new aircraft carrier, describing the HMS Queen Elizabeth as “just a convenient oversized target at sea”

The remark follows on from UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon describing Russia’s only aircraft carrier as “old and dilapidated.”
