5 Things You Need To Know (10/10/17)

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.

1. Trump / Tillerson

US President Donald Trump has challenged his Secretary Of State, Rex Tillerson, to an IQ test.

Tillerson had allegedly called Trump a moron. Responding to this, the President told Forbes “I think it’s fake news, but if he did that, I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win.”

2. Theresa May

A government study has revealed the level of racial disparity in British society. Theresa May has responded by saying tackling the injustice is her “personal priority.”

“We still have a way to go if we are going to truly have a country that works for everyone.”

3. Pound

Tesco is the latest business to say they will keep accepting the old £1 coin after it ceases to be legal tender this Sunday.

The new pound launched in March, but there are still 500 million old coins in circulation. A short transitional period beyond Sunday has been called for by small businesses.

4. Sturgeon

Nicola Sturgeon has told her SNP party conference that Scotland will set up a publicly-owned, not-for-profit energy company.

The operation will be in play by 2021, with the idea to give people more choice over energy suppliers. Sturgeon says it will be “as close to cost price as possible.”

5. UK tourism

The UK is attracting a record number of tourists, with almost 40 million overseas visitors expected to have visited the country in 2017.

Spending is also expected to be up, with £25.7 billion spent during 2017, according to VisitBritain.
