5 Things You Need To Know (19/9/17)
Please note this blog post was published over 12 months ago and so may not include the most up-to-date information, for example where regulation around investing has changed.

Welcome to our daily update, where we summarise the key talking points from the last 24 hours.
1. Brexit
German Chancellor Angela Merkel believes there are “encouraging” signs of progress in Brexit talks.
“But it is encouraging. We will continue the talks with a view to reaching the second phase in December,” she said.
This will be good news for the UK government, who are hoping to move on to the issue of trade talks as soon as possible.
2. Spain to suspend Catalan autonomy
Spain will move to suspend Catalan autonomy from Saturday, allowing it to overtake the running of the region.
This follows the referendum where Catalans voted to secede from Spain, which the Spanish government has said was illegal. The Catalan Parliament has since threatened a vote on independence, amid what has been described as Spanish repression.
3. Parliament
Part of the historic Westminster Parliament building has falled off and smashed a car below. The masonry landed just metres away from an entrance used by senior MPs.
The repair and updating of the building has been an ongoing issue, with the cost being in the billions.
4. Storm Brian
The south of the UK is set to be hit by gale force winds and rain this weekend, with Storm Brian bringing major disruption.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, and large waves are expected to batter southern coasts.
